City Fortress Wall – A Witness to Hajdúszoboszló’s History
The remnants of Hajdúszoboszló’s fortress wall offer a unique glimpse into the city’s history and architectural past. These ancient walls were once part of the city’s defense system and recall the grandeur of medieval fortifications. Walking along the ruins allows visitors to experience the atmosphere of the past and understand how history has shaped the town’s present-day appearance.
The remnants of the city wall in Hajdúszoboszló are among the oldest built heritage sites in the city. Located at Calvin Square, next to the Reformed Church, the fortress wall, which dates back to the 15th century, was reinforced by the Hajdú warriors to protect the town from external attacks. A section of the wall and the adjoining corner bastion can still be viewed today, showcasing the characteristics of historical military architecture.
A commemorative plaque on-site preserves the memory of the victims of the 1660 Turkish attack, when the troops of Szejdi Pasha from Buda invaded the city. The wall remains are not only of historical importance but also offer visitors the chance to learn about Hajdúszoboszló’s past and cultural heritage.
